What is Microsoft Surface?

Surface is a series of tablet computer that is being offered from the stables of Microsoft. It was launched on 18th June 2012 by Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer. It has 2 variants – Surface RT and Surface Pro

The ultra thin and light surface RT was released by Microsoft on 26th October 2012 to coincide with the release of Windows 8 while the laptop in tablet form Surface Pro was released on 9th February 2013. Initially it was available only in Microsoft stores and online.  Both have 10.6 inches screen with aspect ratio of 16:9. Both models have 0.77 mm thick kickstand which allows the tablets to be stood up for hands free viewing. A physical windows key has been provided below the screen

Surface RT operates on Windows RT OS while Surface Pro works on Windows 8 Pro OS. Surface RT has 1300 MHz quad-core ARM-Cortex processor with 2 GB RAM while Surface Pro has Dual Core 1.7 GHz Intel Core Processor. Surface RT comes with storage capacity of 32 GB and 64 GB while Surface Pro has storage capacity of 64 GB and 128 GB.   Both the tablets have 720p front and back cameras. Surface RT weighs 680 g while Surface Pro has 910 g.

Two keyboard covers – Touch cover and Type Cover are being offered with surface. They connect to the surface through a magnetic strip. When folded both serve as protective covers and when open they function as keyboards. The 3.2 mm thick Touch Cover has pressure sensitive keyboard while the 6 mm thick Type cover has a tactile keyboard with physical keys. Both the keyboards have sensors that can determine based on position whether to accept.

Both have a long battery life of 8 hours. The Connect Standby feature of Surface RT allows you to remain connected throughout and you can see your social messages, email even on the locked screen. Office Home and Student RT Preview have been installed in Surface RT and includes versions of Word, Excel, Powerpoint and One Note which have optimized for touch. It works on the applications available in the Windows store.

The method of input as 10 point multi-touch screen (5 point in case of Surface RT). Surface pro offers stylus pen to be used for input.

Concerns have been raised by professionals regarding the disk space. The 64 GB Surface Pro has free space of 29 GB while 128 GB Surface pro has free space of just 89 GB (in 2013)
