Salman Rushdie : Failed assassination attempt and Hezbollah’s comments

Rushdie’s controversial views have created a lot of resentment among the eminent Muslim community leaders. In the United States, there were about of 78 attacks on the bookstores selling his novel and the related bombings resulted in the loss several lives. Dalton chain of bookstore was attacked 30 times and was bombed for three hours at a stretch. United Kingdom was the country where riot against bookstores took place most regularly for the longest time. In the United States, about one-third of bookstores faced the bomb attacks.

The attempt to take the life of Salman Rushdie by the issue of Fatwa issued by the spiritual leaders however failed. The Fatwa against Salman Rushdie was issued and it was planned to attack him with a ‘book bomb’ attack loaded with RDX explosives. This incident took place in a hotel premise in Paddington in Central London. But as a result of premature explosion Mustafa Mahmoud Mazeh was killed in1989. Mazeh was declared a martyr by Hezbollah and was stated that it was the handy work of the Islamic World Movement of Martyrs which has membership of millions of Muslims who are prepared to lay their lives to preserve the honor of the prophet Mohammad. Mazeh’s mother was asked to move to Iran, and the Islamic World Movement of Martyrs’ Commemoration built his shrine in the cremation ground which is dedicated to the memory of Iranian soldiers who died as warriors in the Iran–Iraq War. It was said that true Muslims are those who are ready to give away their lives in order to safeguard the esteem and respect of their prophet Mohammad. This episode had blasted away Mazeh who was carrying out the bomb explosion. According to the verdict given by Hezbollah, Mazah was a martyr who had sacrificed his life in the service of Prophet Mohammad, a reminiscent of a true Muslim who would devote his life at the service of the Almighty.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in one of his provocative speech had stated that had there been a true Muslim in the Western Country like Denmark, Norway and France to carry out the Fatwa to kill Salman Rushdie, he would not have been alive for his insults to Prophet Mohammad, created a lot of controversy across the globe. The explosion in the hotel of Britain was judged and treated as a terrorist attack which was investigated by James Phillips from Heritage Foundation.  It was revealed that a Lebanese group, the Mass of the Mujahidin of Islam was involved in conspiracy in the attempt to kill Salman Rushdie as a compliance of Fatwa.
